Importance of Emotional Quotient (EQ) In Academic Success Among Adolescents - A Review

:Adolescence word comes from the Latin word“adolescere” which means “to grow up” ( Macmillan Dictionary) .One in six of the world’s population, are adolescents aged .Adolescents period is important period of development. At this stages number of Cognitive, physiological, and emotional changes occurs. In today’s modern world life is changing very rapidly. In this situation our adolescent facing a lots of challenges and adjustment problems at home, on work place in social relationship and other areas of their life. Many times it happened due to lack of self- awareness, self- regulation and social skills. These all are component of emotional intelligence. Emotionalintelligence helps to overcome all these issues. The “emotionally intelligent”individual is skilful in four areas, “Identifying, using, understanding, and regulating emotions” (Mayer and Salovey, 1993).Number of studiesshowing the importance of emotional intelligencein different phases of individuals' life. Mayer and Salovy (1997) defined “emotional intelligence as the ability to perceive emotions, integrate emotions to facilitate thoughts, understand emotions and regulate emotions to promote personal growth”. Evidence shows that emotional intelligence has implications how a individual tackle their problems which negativelyeffect physical, mental health (Goleman, 2001). The present paper highlights the assiocation between “emotional intelligence and academic success” of the student. From the review it can be conclude that emotional intelligence is a effective tool to increase the academic performance of the students.
